When my son Darren takes a bath, my wife only allows him to use about three gallons of water. She doesn’t want any accidents to occur with our babyboy. And me being a joker would say something like, “I done told you that boy’s head is too big to fit under water. It’s impossible for him to drown.” Lol. (You can imagine the look on her face when I say that…)

I wondered, what if for Darren’s amusement, I filled up the tub to the brim and told him to go take a bath. Knowing my child, he would be kind of nervous about that even if I explained to him that I would be in the restroom with him the whole time.

You know what…sometimes God puts us in deep waters. We are nervous in deep waters. We prefer a few gallons. But every now and then the Lord ordains deep waters. And He is there with us to make sure we don’t drown. If I will not let Darren drown, surely God will not let you drown.

You will not drown.

And God split the Red Sea! God defied nature. You cannot defy nature. I cannot defy nature, but God can defy nature if He so chooses to.

You and I have a “Red Sea” living on the inside of us. It’s called the sinful nature or the flesh (Romans 7). How absurd would it have been if the children of Israel tried to team up and divide the Red Sea themselves???

As it pertains to the sinful nature…our flesh, when we take a break from relying on the supernatural power of God to restrain “our Red Sea,” the Red Sea in me…the Red Sea in you, you and I will drown in sin just like Pharaoh and his army drowned in sin.

We have to be ever reliant upon the supernatural power of God to restrain the “Red Sea in me.”

Let’s say you are right handed, and you write your name with your left hand. Your name isn’t going to look so good, right?

Let’s say you practice it and then your name starts looking better. Then you begin writing a sentence with your left hand. That sentence is going to take some time to write, and it’s not going to look all that good.

Let’s say you keep practicing and then the sentence starts looking better. Then you begin practicing writing a paragraph. That paragraph is going to be hard to write.

What’s the point to all of this? Doing good and having good behavior is like writing with the left hand. The more you practice, the better you get, but the more you realize you have a long way to go and that you are not as good as you think you are.

I believe that’s why the Apostle Paul said, “I take pleasure in infirmities (weaknesses). For when I am weak, then I’m strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

Sometimes people have children out of wedlock. The results are diverse (unwelcomed responsibilities and drama, to name a couple).

In such cases, having children out of wedlock…”unwanted accidents”…may be like rolling snake eyes to parents, but like rolling eleven to God. It may not be His perfect will, but it’s still the same winnings as rolling seven.

Have you ever noticed that time flies when you’re being unproductive? Even when you’re getting much needed rest, time flies. And there is a thin line between getting rest and being unproductive.

We blow our lives by doing things that are not impactful. If you stood before Christ today, could you say you did as much for Him as you were able to, or would you be embarrassed by the amount of time you squandered?

First there was the Old Testament, then the New Testament. I like this concept because God improved upon what He previously did. Let me add – only God can outdo God.

If you’re looking for something better that’s outside the will of God, there’s no way it can outdo what God has established as His own will. Only God can outdo God.

I like infomercials that advertise so-called high powered exercise equipment. And the equipment may not be bad equipment, but you and I know getting in shape is not about having the right equipment. It’s about having the right work ethic.

It is useless to have exercise equipment and not use it. It is useless to have a bookshelf filled with books and not constantly dissect them. In the same way, faith without works is dead. Exercise your faith…if it’s really faith.

Alex had a lot on his mind, and when he gets like that he likes to clean up. He has his own company and the stress mounted up on him. So he went into his garage and started cleaning it out.

He found all types of things that needed to be thrown away. Then when he finished he began raking leaves. By the time he finished cleaning out the garage and raking leaves, he had about 5 or 6 bags of trash, so he went and set them by the curb.

His next door neighbor, Steve, walked outside and saw the bags, hurried back into his own house and started rounding up the trash. “It’s trash day! I’d better get this trash out of here.” He started dumping food out of pots. He went and got the trash out the restroom. After he gathered it all up he set it out, totally relieved that he did so.

The next day, however, his trash was still there – and to add insult to injury the neighborhood cats had torn up his trash. The problem was, it was not trash day! Alex had leaves and junk from his garage, so he thought it wise to go ahead and set it out. And when trash day came he’d bring out the other trash.

Steve had set out his trash two days prematurely! Why? Because he did not think for himself. He tried to rely on Alex’s thinking. As soon as he saw the trash, he was too lazy mentally to figure out whether it was trash day or not.

A lot of us just go along with today’s trends. Whatever the world does, we do. Whatever the world drinks, we drink. What they listen to, we listen to. If they don’t get involved in outreach ministry, we won’t get involved either because the group isn’t doing it. If they don’t evangelize, we won’t either. We don’t think for ourselves. We are like Steve. Pray for us…

New Years resolutions are not bad. It’s good to have them. I like what John Maxwell once said: Yard by yard, life is hard. But inch by inch, it’s a cinch!

It’s good to have New Years resolutions, but it’s even better to honor your commitment to better yourself everyday. When you’re committed to bettering yourself everyday, you’ll hesitate to make a New Year’s resolution because your mind cannot comprehend what all you can achieve and learn in a year’s time. The great Abraham Lincoln once said: “I do not think much of a man who is not better today than he was yesterday.”

When Jesus came on the scene and had the disciples follow Him, they began to learn. Their major challenge was to unlearn what they knew. Perhaps the biggest part of learning is unlearning.

We’ve had some bad teachers. We’ve gotten some bad advice and followed some bad examples – and it could be costing us dearly right now. Christ is the foundation of good learning. Learn, and unlearn this year. Happy New Year’s!!!
